I told myself that I would start posting our Friday Night Dates from now on, so here's the first....
We went to our favorite Indian restaurant. This place is sooo awesome!
As you can see, the place is called "Silver Coin Indian Grill". For those of you that live in Birmingham, this place is located off of Lorna Road in Hoover.
It is soooo delish! If you have never tried Indian food, I strongly suggest that you do...SOON!!!
Okay, first off...when you sit down in an Indian restaurant they bring you something called "Papadum".
It's their version of our "chips and salsa". It's actually crispy lentil wafers that taste a lot like lay's potato chips, but without the salt, and much better!
Then they bring you these 3 sauces to dip your Papadum in. Don't even ask me what these are, because I have no idea what they are called or what's in them. One of them, though, tastes a lot like a sweet bbq sauce. One of the others is a little spicy and the green one is, well, I don't really know how to explain. They are all delicious, though. You should try ALL of them.
This time around, I actually ordered a Mango Lassi. Everytime we go, we see the real Indian people order these and I have always wanted to try one. This is what it looks like.... This thing was so yummy! It basically tastes like a mango milkshake. I would have said smoothie, but it's creamy instead of icy.
We also ordered some garlic Nan which is a Tandoori exotic bread. It's leavened bread that is baked in a clay oven...The BEST!!!
You use this to dip in the sauce of whatever entree you order. These are what we got this time.
Chicken Makhani (my favorite that I order EVERY time!) and Rogan Josh, which is a lamb dish. The Chicken Makhani is tandoori chicken cooked in a creamy, sort of sweet, with a hint of spicy, tomato/creamy curry type sauce. The Rogan Josh is a more hearty sauce with a red color and a much stronger flavor.
Man, did we enjoy all of this!!! YUMMY! And your entrees come with a basmati rice that is so flavorful and aromatic. It's awesome! Everything that they cook is cooked all day with fresh herbs and spices, many of which you have never heard of.
For dessert, of course, we ordered the Gulab Jamun. It's a cheese dumpling fried and served with rose flavored syrup. For those of you that have tasted beignets, it's sort of like them, but a totally different texture.
If any of you ever want to try Indian, just let us know and we will be glad to give you some recommendations. And a note to all of you, when you are leaving and you notice a little bowl of something strange by the toothpicks, DO pick some up and put it in your mouth. It's real licorice with little pieces of candy...good for your breath and your digestion. Suck on it until the candies are gone and then spit it out. I know, all of this is quite wierd and takes some getting used to, but it is sooo worth it! You should try it, if only for the atmosphere and the experience.
